Turtles

Animal, Turtle, Coral Reef, Ocean, Sea

While we use the word to describe these shelled reptiles that live by the water it really refers to any shelled reptile there’s. In this part of the planet we generally refer to the property turtles as tortoises.

Although we divide the species in our minds by assigning distinct words, they are all one. All these are little guys that are born with a shell. It is a bony leathery shell that grows with them and is pretty much carried together for life.

Turtles are resilient animals and perhaps one of the best examples of evolved life on Earth. This is because they have survived longer than most any other species that has come together. The earliest known turtles lived so long ago that dinosaurs were walking the earth with them, but when the tragedy struck to wipe out the dinosaurs that the turtles managed to survive. They also survived another life changing disaster a few million years later.

These guys back then were so nicely evolved, that is to say they were such a perfect specimen of what they should be, that the earliest fossils we know of aren’t much different than the ones that roam around now. That means that in the past millions of years turtles have not changed, and have not had to change, all that much so as to survive. Compare that with humans that have evolved dramatically from where we were just a million years back.

These days turtles can be found everywhere. Populated or remote locations, in private aquariums or you could find some really large and old turtles in numerous zoos.
